Cowan's iAudio X5L has more features than any of the other players we reviewed. This player can play four music formats, four video formats and can display jpeg images. It also has time management tools and can record FM radio and voice.
This player does not, however, have the ability to display album art and it has a low resolution screen compared to the top ranked products.
We looked at the 30 GB X5L, which is also available in 20 and 60GB sizes.
The X5 had more features than any other player that we reviewed. It can record from a variety of sources, has time management tools, and displays slideshows and more. It cannot play games, but to be fair, few players can.
It has exceptional record abilities, including the capability of recording from the FM radio, from a line-in and voice. It is compatible with Windows and can transfer data from Mac OS and Linux kernel.
The X5L supports four types of music including mp3, wma, wav and flac. These are popular formats and should require little conversion.
While other players support multiple image file types, the iAudio X5L only supports jpeg. So if you want to use this portable for viewing images you may need a good photo editor to convert the image to jpeg.
The X5L supports mp4, xvid, ogg and asf video files. It would be nice if it could play wmv or mov, but you can find plenty to watch in mp4 format.
This player is the same size as the Creative Zen Vision: M but has a relativity small screen at 1.8-inch diagonal. Additionally, the screen is low resolution, at 160X128, whereas the higher ranked products are 320X240 or higher. It has a five way jog controller or you can get an LCD remote control to operate the player.
The X5L has a Built-in Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery that lasts for an impressive 35 hours if you are just playing music and recharges to full charge in six hours.
When we emailed Cowon about the iAudio X5L, they responded quickly with a reply that answered all our questions. They can also be contracted by telephone and they provide extensive online information.
Cowon's iAudio X5L has generous features and a support team that is responsive and helpful. This player also has an exceptional battery life and is good for music playing.
However, if you want a player with superior video ability see one of our higher ranked products.
